Elizabeth Betty Sloboda

Elizabeth “Betty” Bruce Sloboda, 94, of Rostraver Township, formerly of Charleroi and Forward Township, passed away Tuesday, Nov., 22, 2016, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. She was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Elrama, the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth Bendel Bruce. Betty graduated from Monongahela High School in the Class of 1940. After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a telephone operator until World War II ended. She also worked at the Mosier Industries in Donora. In addition, Betty took care of her mother; sister, Alice; and brother, David. Betty married Thomas T. Sloboda Sr. on Aug. 6, 1945, after his return home from World War II, where he served in the 5th Ranger Battalion, Company C as a first sergeant. Betty and Tom lived on River Hill, Forward Township, Allegheny County, for 54 years until his death in 1999. Betty is survived by four sons, Alan T. Sloboda and wife, March of Rostraver Township, Robert J. Sloboda and wife, Christina of Greensburg, Ronald J. Sloboda of Manchester, N.H., and Thomas T. Sloboda Jr. and wife, Linda of River Hill; four grandchildren, David Albeck and wife, Beth, Matthew Albeck, Jonathan Day, and Nicole Smith and husband, Brian; one great-grandson, Ethan Smith; sister, Dorothy Jean Williams; and sisters-in-law, Dolores Bruce and Betty Bruce. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is preceded in death by her sisters, Alice Sitar and Mary Tautkus; her brothers, James Bruce and David Bruce Jr.; and her grandson, Matthew H.R. Sloboda.  Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in the SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will follow in the Mon Valley Memorial Park, Carroll Township.
