Francis C. Kocevar

 Francis Carl “Doc” Kocevar, 89, of Charleroi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He was born September 3, 1927 in Lockview (FallowfieldTwp.), the son of the late Rose Zoretic and Frank Kocevar. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 58 years Irene C. as well as his sister Florence J. Kocevar. Carl attended Valley Forge Prep. School from 1942 to 1946. He was involved in all the various sports and was captain of the school’s first undefeated football team in 1945. He was also a member of the cross country track team. He was president of the varsity club in his senior year. He was elected to the schools hall of fame in September 2004.  Carl attended the University of Georgia from 1946 to 1950 and graduated with his B.S. degree and a member of the football team. He was drafted into the US Army to serve during the Korean Conflict in 1951 as a 2nd Lt and was assigned to the 5th Army.He served the rest of his two year obligation until his honorable discharge in 1953 as a 1st Lt. After his honorable discharge from the service he returned to the University of Georgia and completed his law school studies under the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1955.In 1960 he began his teaching career in the Fallowfield Township Schools which later (1965) merged with the Charleroi Area School District.While teaching he went on to West Virginia University and received his master’s degree in 1966 and his doctorate from the same college in 1976.Doc was an avid reader especially non-fiction books and biographies.He enjoyed his career as a teacher because he liked working with young adults and the academic challenges they brought to him.Many of his ex-students continued to call him long after they graduated.He was also proud of the fact that he was named their favorite teacher several times.Doc’s other interest was in travel , 17 countries.He had studied in Switzerland (International Economics & American Foreign Policy).Doc is survived by his two daughters Karen Flinter and husband Jack of Upper St. Clair and Diane Kocevar and her fiancé Michael Do of NYC, NY and his son Frank C. Kocevar and his wife Janet of Shadyside , three grandchildren Keegan, Kellen and Karl “Francis” Flinter; cousins Charmaine Triscik and Carol Bucich.Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8p.m. in the Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi.A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church, 7th & Washington Ave., Charleroi, celebrated by the Rev.
