Walter Bucky Lucas

Walter S. “Bucky” Lucas, 83 of Charleroi, went to be with the Lord, Sunday May 29, 2016 in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. He was born August 16, 1932 in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Susan Previs and Walter A. Lucas. A 1950 graduate of St. Michael’s High School in the Southside of Pittsburgh, he was a two-sport standout in baseball and basketball and was the school’s all-time leading scorer. Upon graduation he signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox and played for farm teams in Roanoke, Va., San Jose Ca., Louisville, Ky. and Corning, N.Y. 
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and prior to entering the service he married Ann Dudiak on July 25, 1953. Following his honorable discharge in 1955, he began working at the VA Hospital at Leech Farm as a recreational therapist. He was dedicated to, cared for and befriended countless veterans of the Second World War, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, who had been injured during their service. Later he was promoted to Director of Volunteer Services. He coached baseball and basketball at St. Justin’s High School in Pittsburgh. He refereed high school and college basketball and football for 48 years. As a basketball official he worked throughout the Pittsburgh City League, the WPIAL, the Tri-State and in the former ECAC. In Football he was a Division I back and field judge, working many of the Major Eastern Independent Schools to include Pitt, Penn State, Boston College and Notre Dame, and later worked in the Big East Conference. Among the more notable games he officiated were several Army/Navy games, 1980 Pitt/Penn State game, the 1988 Notre Dame/Miami game, the 1980 Peach Bowl, the 1982 Liberty Bowl (Bear Bryant’s last game), the 1984 Kickoff Classic, the 1986 All American Bowl, and the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl. 
Mr. Lucas is survived by his wife Anna Dudiak Lucas; his daughters Susan Sipe and husband Kevin of TN., and Paula Bassi of Carroll Township; his sons Lt. Col Timothy Lucas, retired US Army, Woodbridge, VA and the Honorable Michael J. Lucas and wife Anna of Carroll Township; eight grandchildren Daniel and Matthew Sipe, Katie Ann Neel, Marianne Russo, Maj. Michael Bassi, US Army, Emma, Sarah and Maggie Lucas; and eight great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 9p.m. in the Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. A mass of Christian burial will be held, Thursday at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church, 7 th and Washington Ave., Charleroi, celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Mikonis. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military rites.
