Nancy J. Lutz, 93, passed away on November 6th, 2024. Born September 22nd, 1931 she grew up on the Carson Farm near the village of Lover in Fallowfield Township, Pennsylvania. She resided with her grandfather Noah Carson, her widowed mother Bethel Carson Lutz, and aunts on the farm. The women in her family were educators in Charleroi Public Schools.
Nancy graduated from Charleroi High School in 1949, received an undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from The Pennsylvania State University. Truly a woman before her time, she later earned additional academic credentials and her man achievements including Fulbright Scholarships for study in New Zealand, China, Norway, and Austria. Nancy enjoyed a long career as an educator with Pittsburgh Public Schools, first at Colfax School as a teacher, then acting principal, and finally, a long period as an administrator supervising the elementary and middle school teachers. She had one sister, Barbara Anne Lutz Levenson.
Nancy helped organize the annual Carson Family Reunion for many years, and maintained the family history in Washington County, which dates to the 1780s. She traced the family roots back to Kit Carson. Nancy also was very active in the Pittsburgh community. Some of her interests included: the Officer Friendly Safety Program, the Native American unit of the Western PA Historical Society, the Women’s History Commission, the Abused Women’s Center, and the Buhl Science Center. Nancy traveled extensively over her lifetime, visiting 80 countries.
After retirement, Nancy’s memory began to fade. She spent her final years at Sunrise of Upper Saint Clair. The HOGAN-MELENYZER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, PA 15022 made the arrangements. Per Nancy’s request, there will be no public visitation. She will be buried with her late mother at Rehoboth Presbyterian Cemetery, Belle Vernon, PA. Comments may be forwarded to Claude Carson, ccarson_859@comcast.net, 1252 Pinewood Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15243.
